Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS are proud to announce a recent grant from the Allegheny County Department of Human Services aimed at addressing alarming disparities and stigma in opioid use disorder and overdose death rates among black and brown communities in Pittsburgh. This funding, derived from the county’s opioid settlement funds, marks a pivotal moment in our ongoing efforts to combat opioid addiction and its devastating impact on our community.
“Opioid and other substance use disorders continue to impact the black community,” states De’netta Benjamin-Miller, Executive Director of Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS. “The funds from this grant will empower us to extend our reach and provide essential support to individuals in need within our neighborhoods.”
The statistics underscore the urgency of our mission. According to 2022 data from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner, black individuals in Allegheny County died from opioid use at a rate 2.5 times higher than their white counterparts despite an overall decline in overdose death rates in the county. Improving access to care and raising awareness within the most affected communities is vital to addressing this imbalance.
To achieve our goals, we are implementing a comprehensive approach that encompasses education, intervention, and community engagement. Our initiatives include:
- Public Education Programs: Targeted educational campaigns to increase awareness about opioid use disorder, its risks, and available resources for treatment and support.
- Community-Based Outreach Events: Our goal is to connect directly with individuals and families impacted by opioid use disorder, offering information, resources, and encouragement through participation in community events.
- Small Group Peer Sessions: Hosting peer-led sessions provides a supportive environment for individuals to share their experiences, seek guidance, and access peer support.
- Warm Referrals to Care: Collaborating with healthcare providers and treatment centers to ensure individuals in need connect with resources and care.
Sojourner House is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by opioid use disorder in Pittsburgh’s black and brown communities. Working together with community partners and stakeholders, we can create a brighter, healthier future for all.
