Vanessa spent time with her son at both Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS putting in the work to overcome her substance use disorder and find the path she wanted for herself and her son. The programs gave her an amazing foundation and the confidence to go after what she wanted for her life. “I was at Sojourner House for 5-6 months and then MOMS for 5 years. Sam and her son are finding their path forward with the help of Sojourner House MOMS. The program has not only given her a safe place to stay as she works toward recovery, but it has also taught her many valuable skills and helped her build a bond with her son. “National Recovery Month reminds us that we are all recovering from ‘something’ and helps reduce the stigma attached to substance use disorders/addiction,” said De’netta Benjamin-Miller, Executive Director of Sojourner House. September is National Recovery Month. During National Recovery Month, Sojourner House celebrates and supports individuals who are in recovery from substance use disorders and their families. Friday, May 13 was “graduation day” for lucky students in the inaugural Sojourner House MOMS Professional Development class. After taking part in an 11-session course during early 2022, the students were recognized for their hard work. According to volunteer instructor Susan Orr, the course covered the following topics: résumé, cover letter and thank-you note writing interviewing skills budgeting and financial literacy vision boards During the sessions, students were also visited by guest speakers Patty Jasko (Susan’s sister) and Treasure House executive director Sally Power.
