Rose Edmondson
2009 Pearl of Hope Awardee
Rose Edmondson

Born in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Rose Edmondson spent her favorite years there before leaving for college. She holds a Bachelors degree from Hampton University and a Masters degree from Trenton State College.

Ms. Edmondson is married to William E. Edmondson and is the mother of four daughters and one son. Ms. Edmondson is the proud grandmother to eight grandchildren.

Ms. Edmondson has spent most of her working life in the field of education. She was a math and science teacher at the secondary level and taught elementary education at several grade levels. She was also a reading specialist for the Board of Education in Trenton, New Jersey, and is now retired from the University of Pittsburgh Laboratory School.

A patron of the Arts, Ms. Edmondson is also a community developer for the August Wilson Cultural Center, where she helps to raise money and awareness for the new facility.

Books and reading have been Ms. Edmondson's life long obsession. She has been a literacy volunteer and is on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Library of Upper St. Clair. Her internet book club and the New York Times Book Review are favorites.

Travel has been a major part of her continuing education and life adventures. From Asia to Africa, and many places in between, Ms. Edmondson has enjoyed many cultural experiences.

Finally, Ms. Edmondson is an active member of her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. Many years ago, the sorority was looking for a meaningful public service project to engage and decided that Rose Edmondson would be an excellent advocate for Sojourner House. Rose began her volunteer work with Sojourner House in 1998. Since that time, she has served as a "volunteer coordinator" and has brought many volunteer groups and activities to the families of Sojourner House. She provides regular theater tickets for the women through the Kuntu Theater, helps to organize the annual fashion show through the East End Thrift Shop, gathers books for the children and their mothers, organizes drives among her peers to collect household items for the families, and countless other acts of kindness. Her dedication has been our reward for which we shall be forever grateful.
