Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS help to rebuild families torn apart by addiction and poverty in the Pittsburgh region. Both programs share the mission of providing compassionate, faith-based residential rehabilitation and recovery services for women to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty and chemical abuse while living in their own apartment with their children.
Central to the Sojourner House philosophy is the belief that women can break the chains of addiction and hopelessness, and that they can save their own lives, when surrounded by what means most to them their children.
Sojourner House was named for the great Africian Amercan preacher Sojourner Truth who spoke up for all women after having successfully fought for her own and her child's deliverance from slavery. Sojourner Truth's strong faith and her victory over slavery inspire the Sojourner House mission to help women overcome the slavery of addiction and become free.
Opened in 1991 as a half-way house in East Liberty, Sojourner House provided apartments for women under the auspices of East End Cooperative Ministries. As the program evolved, county authorities and community representatives decided to take the program to the next step. In 1994, the program became a residential rehabilitation program offering faith-based services and a home for women in recovery and their children. Since then, Sojourner House has provided shelter, support and a new life for hundreds of women and their children throughout the region.
Sojourner House MOMS opened its first residence in East Liberty in 2002. MOMS is a partner program of Sojourner House and provides permanent, supported housing for low-income or homeless single women in recovery and their children. The women of Sojourner House MOMS are dually diagnosed; they are recovering from drug or alcohol dependency and a mental health disorder. Women receive parenting education and job training while in a safe, stable home environment.
Families are referred by many agencies throughout the Pittsburgh region. Sojourner House MOMS will soon open two new apartment residences, enabling the program to serve 10 families.
Sojourner House is staffed by experienced health professionals, counselors and recovery specialists. Sojourner House and MOMS are governed by boards of directors comprised of volunteers who reflect the communities served. Sojourner House is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and is a United Way member agency.
